Breaches of electronic records last year involved more insider threats, greater use of social engineering and the continued strong involvement of organized criminal groups, according to communication giant Verizon’s 2010 Data Breach Investigations Report, in collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service. However, the overall number of breaches investigated last year declined from the previous year—”a promising” indication, the study said.
The report found most data breaches investigated were caused by external sources: Sixty-nine percent of breaches resulted from these sources, while only 11 percent of breaches were linked to business partners. The study said insiders caused 49 percent of breaches, which is an increase over previous report findings, primarily due to an expanded dataset and the types of cases studied by the Secret Service, Verizon said.
Many breaches involved privilege misuse, the report stated, with 48 percent of breaches attributed to users who, for malicious purposes, abused their right to access corporate information. An additional 40 percent of breaches were the result of hacking, while 28 percent were due to social tactics and 14 percent to physical attacks. The reported said as in previous years, nearly all data was breached from servers and online applications, with 85 percent of breaches not considered highly difficult; 87 percent of victims had evidence of the breach in their log files, yet missed it.

Microsoft announced July 28 that Adobe will begin informing vendors of software vulnerabilities via the Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP). The announcement comes in conjunction with the opening of Black Hat USA 2010, where Microsoft is unveiling a number of products designed to enhance the security of its platforms and applications.
Originally launched in October 2008, MAPP was built with the intention of delivering vulnerability information to security software vendors ahead of Redmond’s regular Patch Tuesday updates. Microsoft claims MAPP has resulted in a decrease in the time needed by IDS/IPS vendors to create protections, as well as providing an opportunity for smaller vendors to access involved data in a more expedited manner.
As part of the program, Adobe will share its product vulnerabilities with 65 global MAPP members.
“Microsoft acknowledges that the constantly changing threat landscape requires a new approach to security—collaboration and shared responsibility are key as past individual efforts are no longer enough,” Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center, wrote in a July 28 statement. “We’re excited about extending the benefits of MAPP to Adobe users as we’ve seen clear evidence of its impact in advancing customer protections.”
In its own statement, Adobe suggested that MAPP would become “an important part” of the company’s product-security initiatives.

Meanwhile, Day gives Adobe another avenue to spread its Flash, Flex, and LiveCycle tools in the enterprise.

From the “I can’t have an honest discussion with my family, so I prefer to spy on them” department comes an iPhone and iPad app that promises to keep track of them wherever they go. Family Tracker for the iPhone takes advantage of iOS4’s multitasking to run quietly in the background on an iPhone. As long as the app is running, it’s checking the phone’s location via GPS and uploading it to Family Tracker’s servers, where the owner of the account can log in via the Web or from their own iPhone to find out where the phone is located.
The developers sell the app as a way to make sure your spouse isn’t cheating on you or that your kids are where they claim to be, which makes sense if your need to know where they are at any time is greater than your trust in your spouses or your children. The app even allows you to “ping” another user’s phone using push notifications that, when acknowledged, will record the user’s GPS location and upload it to the service.

If you can code, you can get work.
Demand for C#, Java/J2EE, .Net, Oracle, Sharepoint and SAP skills are very high, according to a July report from IT job board Dice, which surveyed recruiters and human resource professionals.
“Not only is demand strong for these professionals, but these positions as a group pay on average $10,000 more than the average national paycheck for tech professionals,” said Tom Silver, senior vice president of Dice, in a statement. “And confirming their coveted in-demand status, these IT pros are receiving double the pay raise this year, as compared to technology professionals as a whole.”
The No. 1 programming and development skill in demand is Java/J2EE with more than 14,000 open job positions nationally, according to Dice.

A computer that monitored drilling operations on the Deepwater Horizon had been freezing with a “blue screen of death” prior to the explosion that sank the oil rig last April, the chief electrician aboard testified Friday at a federal hearing.
“Blue screen of death,” or BSOD, is a term most often used to describe the display shown by Microsoft Windows after a serious crash that has incapacitated a PC.
In his testimony Friday, Michael Williams, the chief electronics technician aboard the Transocean-owned Deepwater Horizon, said that the rig’s safety alarm had been habitually switched to a bypass mode to avoid waking up the crew with middle-of-the-night warnings.
Williams said that a computer control system in the drill shack would still record high gas levels or a fire, but it would not trigger warning sirens, according to numerous reports, including stories published by the New York Times and New Orleans‘ largest daily, the Times-Picayune .
