Dell and other system vendors will stop shipping systems preinstalled with Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home, starting Oct. 22. In preparation for that event, Dell customers will no longer have Windows XP as an option starting in late September, although the manufacturer plans on continuing Windows XP driver support through December 2012.
“After the October 22 date, qualified customers will still be able to get systems with Windows XP… through Dell’s Custom Factory Integration service,” reads a Sept. 7 posting on Direct2Dell, the company’s corporate blog. “Otherwise, customers who order new machines with Windows 7 Professional or higher can run XP applications in Windows XP mode.”
Microsoft had previously announced in April 2008—and reiterated in June—that OEMs would no longer be able to preinstall Windows XP Home on new netbook PCs starting Oct. 22. That follows the company’s announcing the end of Windows XP SP2 support on July 13. Extended support for Windows XP SP3 is schedule to end in April 2014, with no new updates or patches after that point.
