Introducing and Building the Project Management Office Using the ADKAR Change Model
The project management office (PMO) has a rising role in many industries, varying between a support office for other units within the organization to a strategic entity that helps senior management implement strategies on the ground. The PMO is new in many industries. Many organizations consult leading experts to help them design the best processes and templates, yet managers fail to consider the human factor when introducing project management to the organization. Because it requires change, organizations typically face the challenge of introducing the PMO in a manner that meets the least amount of resistance. This paper proposes the ADKAR change model (awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement) to promote stakeholder buy-in prior to introduction of the PMO.
